　　1 While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether his operation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so.

　　当约翰.吉尔伯特住院的时候，他问医生他的手术是否成功，但医生拒绝告诉他。

　　ask for 请求, 要求

　　I have the right to ask for an explanation.

　　我有权要求一个解释。

　　2 When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for Doctor Millington.

　　当房里只剩他一个人时，他挂通了医院的交换台，要求与米灵顿医生讲话。

　　区别lonely, alone,

　　这两个形容词均有“孤单的，寂寞的”之意。lonely: 强调孤独感，含“渴望和他人在一起”的意味。alone: 普通用词，指独自一人的状态，有时含孤寂之意。

　　alone是表语形容词，因此能说The man is alone，不能说an alone man。也不能说very alone，只能说much alone或very much alone，且后者比前者普遍。

　　alone指“独自的”，lonely指“寂寞的”，一个人也许alone但并不lonely(虽自己一人，但不寂寞)，或是虽不alone而感觉lonely(虽不是自己一个人，却还是寂寞)。有时lonely还指“不大有人到的”，如a lonely house。

　　I was alone in the classroom.

　　我独自在教室里。

　　After tea I wandered alone about the town.

　　吃过下午茶,我独自在城里漫步。

　　3 When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.

　　当这位医生接过电话时，吉尔伯特先生说他想询问一个病人的情况，是一位名叫约翰.吉尔伯特的先生。

　　inquire 询问，打听。和inquire搭配的短语有:

　　inquire for 求见, 询问, 要找 inquire into 调查, 查问, 探究 inquire of 探问

　　We inquired the way of a boy.

　　我们向一个男孩问路。

　　He is the person you inquire for.

　　他就是你要见的那个人。

　　We must inquire into the matter.

　　我们必须调查此事。

　　4 When the doctor answered the phone, Mr. Gilbert said he was inquiring about a certain patient, a Mr. John Gilbert.

　　当这位医生接过电话时，吉尔伯特先生说他想询问一个病人的情况，是一位名叫约翰.吉尔伯特的先生。

　　(1)certain adj. 某个

　　some+可数名词单数是表示某个

　　certain 后面的东西不能定

　　a certain boy

　　two certain boys

　　certain 根据它前面的数量来定

　　某一个 a certain+n. 某两个two certain+n.(复数)

　　搭配的短语 make certain of 确定，确认 for some reason 由于某个理由

　　You'd better leave now if you want to make certain of getting there on time.

　　你要想准时到达那里就最好马上走。

　　(2)a Mr. John Gilbert

　　a+人名表示不确定性，指一位叫某名字的人

　　5 He then asked when Mr. Gilbert would be allowed to go home and the doctor told him that he would have to stay in hosptial for another two weeks.

　　然后他又问吉尔伯特先生什么时候可以回家，医生说他在医院还必须再住上两个星期。

　　allow做及物动词时表示“允许, 让某人得到, 留出, 同意(法律)”做不及物动词时和for搭配，表示“考虑到, 允许”

　　You are not allowed to smoke here.

　　这里不许吸烟。

　　We must allow for delays caused by bad weather.

　　我们必须考虑到因坏天气所造成的延误。
