  1 背熟:The salvage operation had been a complete failure.

  salvage operation:the act of saving

  Eg: My examination is a complete failure. 这次考试完全失败了。

  Their experiment had been a complete failure.

  2 背熟:A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship's captain instructing him to

  give up the search.

  主动形态:The shop's captain received a radio message from the mainland instructing him to give up

  the search.

  结构分析:instructing him to give up the search作宾语补足语,进一步说明message内容

  instruct sb. to do sth. 命令某人做某事

  The editor sent a fax to the journalist instructing him to get statistics.

  3 Despite the message, the captain of the Elkor decided to try once more.

  despite==in spite of

  despite sth/ the fact that+从句

  Despite having been there twice, he failed to find the place.

  Despite the fact that he had been there twice, he failed to find the place.

  make another attempt

  try once more代替了make another attempt

  4 Though the crew were at first under the impression that the lost ship had been found, the contents

  of the chest proved them wrong.

  结构分析:多重复合句。Though引导让步状语从句,此从句中又含有一同谓语从句that the lost ship had been

  found,对impression作追加说明。

  Ex:What set up the accident / trouble?(set up=cause)

  5、Let us suppose that you are preparing a meal and keeping an eye on the baby at the same time.

  keep an eye on the baby:照料孩子(keep an eye on=look after=take care of)

  as引导非限定性定语从句

  Tips

  1)as,which都可以引导非限定性定语从句,但as重点突出整个句子的含义,而which有可能指代主句当中某个词的

  含义,也有可能指代整个句子的含义。

  2)As引导非限定性定语从句,可以用于主句之前,as和主句之间要有一个逗号分隔开来。

  eg: As we expected, John was admitted to the university. John

  3)As引导非限定性定语从句,也可以用在主句之后,这时就相当于which

  eg:

  She married him, which was unexpected.

  She married him as was unexpected.

  但在as所引导的非限定性定语从句中,如果运用的是被动语态结构,被动词可以省略。

  eg:

  She married him as unexpected. (was省略)

  The material is elastic as shown in the figure.

  (在这种情况下,shown之前省略了谓语动词,这时就不能把as换成which . 如果要用which则要补上谓语动词)

  The material is elastic, which is shown in the figure.

  10、The woman immediately behind the two cars happened to be a learner.=it happened that the woman

  behind the two cars was a learner.

  happen to:碰巧

  Ex:

  I happen to hear the news .

  It happened that I heard about it the day before yesterday.

  11、This made the driver following her brake hard.

  Following现在分词做定语修饰driver

  12、Seeing a cake flying through the air, a lorry-driver who was drawing up alongside the car,pulled

  up all of a sudden.

  draw up=pull up 停车

  all of sudden=suddenly

  13、The lorry was loaded with empty beer bottles and hundreds of them slid off the back of the

  vehicle and on to the road.

  was loaded with=was filled with

  vehicle这里指的是truck lorry

  14、It took the police nearly an hour to get the traffic on the move again.

  get the traffic on the move 使得车辆开动起来

  介词on和名词搭配表示处于某种状态或者某种动作正在进行之中

  on the move=move from place to place on 在移动之中

  on the rise

  on the boil

  on the go

  on the watch

  on the turn

  on the run

  on the fly

  on the increase

  on the decrease
