　　1.In democratic countries any efforts to restrict the freedom of the press are rightly

　　condemned.

　　eg:The terrorist action has been condemned as an act of barbarism.

　　eg:The prisoner condemned(punished) to death.

　　2. Acting on the contention that facts are sacred,reporters can cause untold suffering to individuals by pub-lishing details about their private lives.

　　acting on ：to behave according to 以......来行事，遵循......来行事

　　contention:opintion;disagreement eg:The issue is still in contention.

　　sacred :神圣的,重要的 Life is sacred.

　　untold:too much to be measured

　　结构分析：复合句，现在分词短语极其所带同位语从句做原因状语，that引导的部分是contention 的同位语从句，by引导方式状语

　　3.Though we may enjoy reading about the lives of others, it is extremely doubtful whether we would equally enjoy reading about ourselves.

　　doubtful =uncertain ;

　　read of/about 读到(有关......的情况)

　　结构分析:though引导让步状语从句,主句含有一个主语从句,it 形式主语

　　unlikely 经常跟wherther引导的从句

　　acquire:obtain

　　eg:The latest conflict further illustrates the weakness of the UN.

　　eg:The speaker illustrates his point with a diagram.

　　5.As the parents had five children, life was a perpetual struggle against poverty.

　　perpetual :overlasting

　　struggle:永无休止的斗争在贫困中永无止尽的挣扎。。。

　　the nation's struggle for independence

　　the struggle between good and evil

　　They would have continued to struggle against economic odds

　　6. They were expecting their sixth child and faced with even more pressing economic problems.

　　expecting a baby/be expecting 怀孕了

　　He was overjoyed to learn that his wife was expecting(a baby).

　　be face with 面临

　　In the process of studing English,we are faced with a great many problems,which should be surmounted.

　　pressing :urgent

　　A pressing need/issue/ 迫切需要

　　Their invitation was so pressing that I can do nothing but accept.

　　7.Newspapers and magazines offered the family huge sums for the exclusive rights to publish stories and photographs.

　　The reading room is for the exclusive use of teachers.
