　　1.背熟：The salvage operation had been a complete failure.

　　salvage operation:the act of saving

　　Eg: My examination is a complete failure. 这次考试完全失败了。

　　Their experiment had been a complete failure.

　　2 背熟：A radio message from the mainland had been received by the ship's captain instructing him to give up the search.

　　主动形态：The shop's captain received a radio message from the mainland instructing him to give up the search.

　　结构分析：instructing him to give up the search作宾语补足语，进一步说明message内容

　　instruct sb. to do sth. 命令某人做某事

　　The editor sent a fax to the journalist instructing him to get statistics.

　　3 Despite the message, the captain of the Elkor decided to try once more.

　　despite ==in spite of

　　despite n./doing sth/ the fact that+从句

　　Despite having been there twice, he failed to find the place.

　　Despite the fact that he had been there twice, he failed to find the place.

　　make another attempt

　　try once more代替了make another attempt

　　4 Though the crew were at first under the impression that the lost ship had been found, the contents of the chest proved them wrong.

　　结构分析：多重复合句。Though引导让步状语从句，此从句中又含有一同谓语从句that the lost ship had been found，对impression作追加说明。

　　under the impression that == thinking that

　　I am under the impression that he is the manager of the store.

　　He is under the impression that you'll help him.

　　prove +宾语+补语

　　One mad action is not enough to prove a man mad.

　　5 What they had in fact found was a ship which had been sunk many years before.

　　结构分析: 多重复合句。What they had in fact found主语从句。which had been sunk many years before.修饰ship。

　　需定语时用 sunken

　　The ship had sunk

　　a sunken ship

　　personal belongings 个人所属物品

　　together with 还有

　　6 Nothing of value was found, but the numerous items which were brought to the surface proved to be of great interest.

　　Nothing of value=nothing valuable 此处of +抽象名词=形容词

　　of value ==valuable

　　very much interesting == of great interest

　　of great importance / of great significance / of no consequence / of no importance / of no interest

　　7 The most valuable find of all was the ship's log book, parts of which it was still possible to read.

　　结构分析：parts of which引导非限制性定语从句修饰log book. 该从句的结构为：名词/代词+介词+关系代理引导的定语从句(非限制性定语从句)。

　　parts of the log book

　　it was still possible to read.

　　It was still possible to read parts of the log book.

　　8 From this the captain was able to piece together all the information that had come to light.

　　come to light = become known = emerge 被公开，被发现(不及物动词短语，要用主动语态)

　　Eg: The secret came to light after his death.

　　bring sth to light/ review 把......公布于众

　　Eg: The two brothers reviewed/ brought the secret to light

　　9 This was later confirmed by a naval official at the Ministry of Defence after the Elkor had returned home.

　　confirmed == made sure
