  Lesson 41

  1.beyond prep. 1.在……之外,在……那边2.超出……范围

  live beyond one's means 入不敷出,超支

  例句:We have to watch our expenses. We shouldn't live beyond our means.

  我们得注意我们的花销。我们不能超支。

  2.descend v. 下来,下落

  (be) descended from 遗传;是的后代(passed on from; be offspring of)

  例句:The people there were descended from only twenty-five or thirty oriainal families.

  那里的人是岛上最早的25或30户家庭的后裔。

  3.forever adv.永远,总是,老是

  go on forever 持续很长时间

  例句:The seminar seems to go on forever today. I was barely able to stay awake.

  今天的研讨会好像一直没完。我几乎都睡着了。

  4.home n. 家

  home assignment 家庭作业(homework)

  A:What is the home assignment from Professor Smith?

  A:史密斯教授留的作业是什么?

  B:Finish reading Chapters 5 and 6, and write an essay based on chapters 3 and 4 Remember, it's your turn to give presentation next Monday.

  5.involve vt.1.卷入,陷入,连累2.包含,含有,涉及

  (be) involved in 参与,参加(take part in, participate in)

  例句:1.In the Victorian era, people thought that it was unlady like for a woman to be involved in any sports activity.

  在维多利亚时代,人们认为妇女参加任何一种体育运动都有损淑女形量。

  2.The processing of diamond is so complicated that hundreds of people will be involved in the whole range of work.

  钻石的加工如此复杂以致成百上千的人参加到工作的全过程中。

  6.live v. 居住,生活 adj.活的,有生命的

  live up to 做到,达到(behave in accordance with sth.)

  例句:When a consumer finds that an item she or he bought is faulty or in some way does not live up to the manufacturer's claim for it, the first step is to present the warranty or any other records which might help at the store of purchase.

  当一个消费者发现自己买的商品有毛病或在某个方面没有达到制造商所承诺的效果,第一步就要出示保修单或者任何能够在购物商店有所帮助的其他凭据。

  7.look v. 1.看,瞧,注视

  Don't look at me! 别看我!此习语通常用来襄示不同意。

  1.A:I found a perfect book bag but I'm about 20 dollars short.

  A:我发现一个很不错的书包,但是我差20块钱。

  B:Don't look at me. I don't get paid for another week.

  B:别看我,我得一星期之后才能拿到工资呢。

  2.A:Don't you think someone should take the dog to the doctor?

  A:是不是应该有人把这只狗带去看医生啊?

  B:Hey! Don't look at me.

  B:嘿,你别看我,我才不去呢。

  3.A:Shouldn't someone pick up the clothes from the cleaner's?

  A:是不是有人应该去干洗店把衣服取回来啊?

  B:Don't look at me.

  B:你别看我,我才不去呢。

  look away from 从…往别处看

  例句:I looked away from the group, too embarrassed to say hello.

  我的目光避开了大家,不好意思和大家打招呼。

  look over 检查

  例句:1.Do you look over your own papers for typing mistakes?

  你自己检查论文的打字错误了吗?

  2.Be sure to look over your papers to find any error.

  一定得检查你论文的错误。

  8.mention n. 提及,说起

  not to mention 更不用说;不必说(as well as; let alone)

  例句:l.I thought it was the most moving story I had ever read, not to mention written.

  我认为这是我所读过的,更不用说是写过的最感人的故事。

  2.The nurses are not friendly, Not to mention the fact that it's noisy because no one observes visiting hours.

  护士们不太友好。更不用说医院里太吵,因为没有人遵守探视时间。

  9.ride v. 骑,乘 n. 骑,乘

  get a ride with 搭...车

  例句:Could I get a ride with you to the concert tonight?

  今天晚上能搭你的车去听音乐会吗?

  give someone a ride 让某人搭车

  例句:1.I can give you a ride. I'm going home this weekend anyway.

  你可以搭我的车,反正这个周末我要回家。

  2.Do you think you could give me a ride to the library tonight?

  今天晚上我能搭你的车去图书馆吗?

  A:Is there a bus I can get to the station?

  A:有没有去车站的汽车?

  B:There is. But you can't rely on it. I'll give you a ride if you can wait while I put these things away.

  B:有。但你不能依赖它。如果你等我一会儿,我把这些东西收拾一下,我开车送你。

  10.selection n. 精选品;选择,挑选

  a selection of 汇集了精选的(a collection of things of a kind, as of goods for sale)

  例句:We have a selection of hammers and other tools in this hardware store.

  11.short adj. 短的,低的;粗暴的,无礼的 adv.不到,不足;突然

  nothing short of 一点儿也不缺少

  例句:The concert I heard last night was nothing short of brilliance.

  short of 缺...(without enough/sufficient...)

  A:The maths requirements for graduation are being changed.

  A:关于毕业数学必修的要求正在改变。

  B:But I'm afraid I may be short of one course.

  B:但我担心我会缺一门课。

  12.treat vt.医疗;对待,处理;论述,款待 n. 乐趣,款待,请客

  it is one's treat 该由某人请客(做东)(sb. should pay the bill)

  A.I hear there is a good Japanese restaurant nearby. Would you like to go there for lunch?

  A:我听说附近有一家不错的日本料理,你想去那里吃午饭吗?

  B:Yes. but it's my treat this time.

  B:是的,不过这次该我请客了。

  例句:It's your treat to buy ice-creams.

  该你请客买冰激淋了。

  13.work v. 工作,操作 n.工作

  be all in a day's work 日常生活的一部分

  例句:To anyone working in a hotel, complaints from guests are all in a day's work.

  对所有在饭店工作的人来说,客人的抱怨是难免的。

  in the works 正在准备阶段

  例句:An advanced course in theoretical chemistry is in the works.

  一门理论化学的高级课程正处于开课的准备阶段。

  get sth.to work 使用;使...工作起来(use, operate)

  例句:The record player is very old. That she got it to work amazes me.

  录音机很旧了,使我惊讶的是她居然还能用它。

  it works 有用,起作用(useful, effective)

  A:My feet swell in the heat, and then my shoes get tight.

  A:由于天热我的脚肿了,然后鞋显得很紧。

  B:Have you tried stretching them with solvent? I understand it works.

  B:你试过用溶剂把鞋撑大没有?我知道这很有用。
