  Lesson 40

  1.advance vi.1.前进,向前移动2.取得进展 n. 前进,进展 adj. 预先的

  in advance 提前(同义习语一起记忆:before hand, ahead of time)

  例句:l.It's a really nice apartment. But the owners want two-month rent in advance and I just don't have it.

  这房子真好。但房主要我预交两个月的房租,可我没有。

  2.If you want to borrow the family car or get your mother mend something for you, you will have better success if you possibly ask in advance.

  如果你想借用家里的车或者让母亲帮你修补一些东西,提前提出要求的话,成功的可能性会大一些。

  2.enough adj. 充足的,足够的 pron. 足够 adv.充分地,足够地

  leave well enough alone 差不多就不要再弄了,免得画蛇添足

  A:I'm going to revise my politics report.

  A:我要把政治学报告修改一下。

  B:I think you should leave well enough alone.

  B:我觉得你应该差不多就行了,不要画蛇添足。

  3.grant v. 同意,准予,授予

  research grant 研究补助

  例句:May seems surprised that she got a research grant.

  梅对于她能够获得一份研究补助感到很意外。

  4.help n. 帮助,资助,助手 vi./vt. 帮助

  help oneself 自己动手

  A:Excuse me, would you mind if I used your phone?

  A:劳驾,我用一下你的电话你不介意吧!

  B:Help yourself, it's on the table over there.

  B:你自己来吧,电话就在那边的桌子上。

  help oneself to 自己动手吃

  例句:1.We helped ourselves to the coffee.

  我们自己动手喝咖啡。

  2.George helped himself to another piece of apple pie.

  乔治自己又吃了一块苹果派。

  Somethings just can't be helped.有些事情是无法避免的。

  A:I didn't know how I managed to break the platter. I'll be more than happy to buy you a new one.

  A:我也不知道怎么就把那个碟子打碎了。我会很高兴为你买一个新的。

  B:Forget about it. Somethings just can't be helped.

  B:把它忘了吧!有些事情是无法避免的。

  can't help doing 避免不了;忍不住

  例句:I can't help thinking it was all my fault.

  我不禁要想这全是我的错。

  help out 帮忙(offer help)

  例句:I'll visit my parents back East and help out at my father's business.

  我将回东部看望父母并在我父亲的企业里帮忙。

  5.phone n. 电话,听筒 v. 打电话

  phone book 电话号码簿(参见phone directory)

  例句:The phone book is over on the desk.

  电话簿就在课桌上。

  A:I lost the piece of paper Laura gave me. You know, the one with her address on it.

  A:我把劳拉给我的那张纸给丢了,就是上面有她地址的那张纸。

  B:You might be able to find it listed in the phone book.

  B:也许你能在电话簿里找到她的地址。

  get off the phone 别占着电话

  例句:Can you get off the phone? I have to make a call.

  你能不能别总占着电话?我得打个电话。

  on the phone 正在打电话(making a phone call)

  例句:So sorry to have kept you waiting, I was on the phone.

  真抱歉,让您久等了,我刚才在打电话。

  6.put vt.放,摆;叙述,表达

  put down 放下来

  A:I hope you like the novel lent you. I wasn't sure whether it was the kind of book you would be interested in.

  A:我希望你喜欢我借给你的那本小说。我不知道它是不是你感兴趣的那一类书。

  B:You know,I had the same doubt at first. But once I started I simply couldn't put it down.

  B:我一开始也有同样的疑问。但是我一开始读之后就放不下来了。

  7.put out 熄灭,扑灭

  put out 扑灭(火)

  例句:Peter was given a medal for helping to put out the forest fire.

  因为帮助扑灭森林大火,彼得被授予了一枚奖章。

  8.specialize vi. 专门研究

  specialize in 专门从事(devoted to the work of)

  例句:Federal Express is the only U.S. airline specializing in the transportation of small packages—35 kilos or less.

  联邦捷运公司是美国唯一一家专营35公斤以下小包裹快速业务的航空公司。

  9.stop vt./vi.停止,中断,阻止;停留;塞住

  come to a stop 停下来

  例句:If nothing is done, the car will automatically come to a stop and in this way prevent an accident.

  如果没有任何措施的话,汽车会自动停下来并且通过这种方式防止车祸发生。
