  Lesson 23

  1.abuse vt.1.滥用,妄用2.伤害,虐待3.辱骂

  alcohol (drug) abuse 酗酒(吸毒上瘾)(frequently get overdrunk or take drugs)

  例句:1.Brain scans show alcohol abuse kills brain cells.

  大脑扫描结果表明酗酒能杀死脑细胞。

  2.Drug abuse has been a serious social probem for many years.

  多年以来吸毒一直是一个严重的社会问题。

  2.appeal vt.合乎心意,令人高兴;呼吁 n. 呼吁;吸引力

  apeal to (attract, draw)

  例句:1.It is this challenge that appeals to about 100 swimmers a year who are willing to spend time, effort and money to try it.

  正是这种挑战每年吸引着大约100名游泳者花时间、精力和金钱去尝试。

  2.Take a seat, Mr.Brown. Could you tell me which position you think most appeals to you?

  3.associate vt. 联想到,和…发生联系 vi. 和…来往,和…共事 n. 共事的人,伙伴

  associated with 与...有关 ( connected with, related to)

  例句:There are two types of popular music with national or international appeal that are basically American. One is jazz. The other is a musical form associated with New York city theatres.

  4.dozen n. 一打,十二个

  A:I can't decide whether to take anthropology or geology this term.

  5.luxury n. 奢侈,奢侈品,豪华

  was a luxury 很奢侈

  例句:Many people believed that getting a divorce was a luxury that only the rich could afford.

  6.practice vt.1.练习,实习2.从事,执行 vi. 练习,开业

  basketball practice 篮球训练

  例句:I heard Dan twisted his ankle during basketball practice yesterday.

  我听说丹在昨天的篮球训练中把脚给扭了。

  A:Basketball practice doesn't take a lot of time, does it?

  A:篮球训练不需要太多的时间,是不是啊?

  B:Only every spare minute.

  B:只不过是每分钟的自由时间(意即时间花得很多)。

  7.praise n. 赞美的话,赞美 v. 歌颂

  beyond compare/all praise 绝佳,极好(wonderfully good)

  例句:1.Her performance at yesterday's concert was beyond compare.

  她在昨天音乐会中的表演精彩绝伦。

  2.The quality of the new product is beyond all praise.

  新产品的质量非常好。

  8.turn vt. 转向,转弯;改变 vi. 恶心

  in turn 依次;轮流(one after another; in succession)

  例句:When they finished asking, Mr.Symonds leaned back in his chair and looked at each of his colleagues in turn.

  他们问完之后,西蒙斯先生靠在椅子上依次看了看他的每一个同事。

  turn down 把音量调低(lower the volume of radio or TV, etc.)

  例句:If you can't turn it down, please use the earphone. I'm doing homework.

  如果你不能把音量调低的话,请使用耳机。我正在写作业。

  turn over (使)车、船翻倒(to turn sth. upside down with strong force)

  例句:1.Mike was struck by another vehicle and turned completely over.

  迈克的车被另一辆车撞了一下,完全撞翻了。

  2.A big wave turned the boat over.

  一个巨浪把小船打翻了。
