　　First listen and then answer the question.

　　听录音，然后回答以下问题。

　　How did Jane receive a letter from a stranger?

　　My daughter, Jane, never dreamed of receiving a letter from a girl of her own age in Holland. Last year, we were travelling across the Channel and Jane put a piece of paper with her name and address on it into a bottle. She threw the bottle into the sea. She never thought of it again, but ten months later, she received a letter from a girl in Holland. Both girls write to each other regularly now. However, they have decided to use the post office. Letters will cost a little more, but they will certainly travel faster.

　　【课文翻译】

　　我的女儿简从未想过会接到荷兰一位同 龄姑娘的来信。去年，当我们横渡英吉利海峡时，简把写有她姓名和住址的一张纸条装进了一只瓶子，又将瓶子扔进了大海。 此后她就再没去想那只瓶子。但10个月以后，她收到了荷兰一位姑娘的来信。现在这两位姑娘定期通信了。然而她们还是决定利用邮局。这样会稍微多花点钱，但肯定是快得多了。

　　age n. 年龄

　　channel n. 海峡

　　【知识点讲解】

　　1 dream [动词]梦见，梦想

　　一般用法为dream + that 从句，或dream of doing sth.

　　其过去式和过去分词均有两种，dreamed或dreamt。

　　I never dream of buying a house in Hangzhou.

　　我从没想过在杭州买套房子。

　　2 we were travelling across the Channel.

　　这里的the Channel 特指英吉利海峡。

　　3 throw [动词]投，掷，抛出

　　throw的过去式为threw，过去分词为thrown。

　　throw sth. into sth. 把某物扔进某处

　　throw sth. to sb. 把某物扔向某人，其目的在于“传递”，介词to表示行为方向，动机是善意的。

　　throw sth. at sb. 把某物打向某人，其目的在于“打”，介词at表示动作在于企图攻击的目标，动机是恶意的。

　　短语拓展：throw oneself into 积极从事 throw away 扔掉 throw about 乱丢;乱扔 throw up 呕吐

　　It's very dangerous to throw stones to the cars on the expressway.

　　对高速公路上的车扔石块是很危险的。

　　4 think of 想到，考虑，设想。打算

　　如果think和of之间加入不同的词，整体意思也会有一些区别，如：

　　think much of 重视，赞扬 think better of 改变主意，重新考虑 think little of 轻视

　　think nothing of 不把……放在心里，轻视 think well of 高度评价 think highly of 对……高度评价，尊重

　　I never thought of encountering my high school classmate at the airport.

　　我从没想过在机场遇到我的高中同学。

　　5 receive sth. from sb. 从某人那里收到某物

　　I received a bar of chocolate from my sister.

　　我从姐姐那里收到一条巧克力。

　　6 decide [动词]决定，判断

　　decide to do sth.

　　表示决定的词还有determine，resolve等，它们之间的细微区别如下：

　　decide 侧重指经过思考、比较、讨论或询问之后做出的决定

　　determine 指经过深思熟虑之后决心做某事并坚持下去。

　　resolve 语气很强，强调坚定不移的信念，暗含远大抱负和坚强决心。

　　He decided to study abroad after one-month consideration.

　　在考虑了一个月后，他决定去国外留学。
