1.Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display.

译文：泰勒——一家珠宝店的老板， 正在欣赏着新布置的橱窗。

解析：

1）admire本指“仰慕”， 宾语一般为人。这里活用作“欣赏”。例：

Whenever traveling by train, he likes to admire the view of the countryside through the train window. 只要乘火车旅行， 他总喜欢透过车窗观赏乡村的风景。

联想记忆：

feast one’s eyes on...大饱眼福

feast one’s ears on...大饱耳福


2）window display意为“橱窗展”。

联想记忆：

on display 在展出

window shopping 只看不买

shop around 四处转转


2.One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain.

译文：一个窃贼被一尊很重的雕像击中， 但由于他忙着抢钻石首饰， 竟连疼痛都顾不上了。

解析：

1）help oneself to sth. 意为“自便”。例：

She helped herself to my food without my permission. 她没问我就吃起我的东西。

be busy doing sth.: 忙于做…

2）类似用法： be busy with sth., busy oneself doing sth., be occupied with, be swamped with sth. 例：

She was too busy helping herself to the delicious food to notice that a thief helped himself to her handbag. 她只顾吃美食， 没注意窃贼正在偷她的手包。

I’m now swamped with marking examination papers. 我现在忙着评阅试卷。
