Lesson 81 A trip to Australia

I had never been abroad before, so when I was offered a chance to go to Australia, I was very excited. I knew it was a long journey, but I didn't realize just how long it would be.

We left London airport in the evening and arrived in Sydney two days later. The journey was very tiring and boring. We flew for about six hours and then stopped at an airport where we had to wait for three hours before our plane took off again. This happened twice, so we spent twelve hours in planes. I couldn't sleep, so I watched the films and read magazines.

When we arrived in Sydney, I was happy to get off the plane. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining. The first thing I did was to take off my coat and jumper. I had come from winter in England and here it was summer.

For the first few days, I felt very strange because of the time difference. Australia is ten hours ahead of England, so when it was morning there, it was midnight in London. I wasn't hungry at the right times and I fell asleep during the day.

After a week, I had adjusted to Australian time and began to enjoy myself. I went to the beach and swam in the sea, visited the zoo and saw kangaroos and koalas, and went shopping.

I enjoyed my trip to Australia, but I was also happy to come home. I realized that although it's nice to travel abroad and learn about other countries and cultures, there's no place like home.

  Lesson 82 Unequal partnerships

It is only in comparatively recent times that historians have begun to look at the story of the Industrial Revolution from the viewpoint of the working class. One historian who has done much research into this subject is E. P. Thompson. In his book The Making of the English Working Class, Thompson argues that in the late eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century, industrial capitalists formed an 'unequal partnership' with workers.

The capitalists had the money and the power. They owned the factories and machines and controlled production. The workers were poor and powerless. They had no say in how the factories were run and no trade unions to protect their interests. Even so, according to Thompson, they played an active role in the Industrial Revolution. They resisted attempts to increase working hours and campaigned for the right to vote.

Thompson claims that the Industrial Revolution was not just a period of rapid economic growth, but also a time of conflict. Industrial capitalists made vast fortunes, but at the expense of their workers. Living conditions in the new industrial towns were appalling. Workers and their families were crammed into tiny houses and disease was rampant. According to Thompson, it was only through organization and resistance that workers gained some protection from exploitation.

It is easy to see Thompson's study as a depressing one, but it is important to realize that he does not present the Industrial Revolution as simply a story of conflict and exploitation. He stresses the role that ordinary men and women played in shaping events and this gives his study a positive tone.
