　　Lesson 17 A pleasant trip

　　It was Ann's birthday. Her parents gave her a watch. She was very happy and thanked her parents. Ann had a good friend, Mary. Mary's parents gave her a beautiful sweater. On the following Saturday, Ann said to Mary, "Let's go and see Aunt Jane today. She's very nice to us and she's always giving us sweets."

　　"That's a good idea," Mary answered. "Let's go this afternoon."

　　They went to Aunt Jane's house at half past two. Aunt Jane was in her garden. She was planting some flowers. She saw the two girls and came over to them.

　　"Many happy returns of the day, Ann," she said. "How old are you today?"

　　"I'm thirteen, Aunt Jane. And thank you very much for the sweets you gave me last week," Ann answered.

　　"And what did your parents give you, Ann?" Aunt Jane asked.

　　"They gave me a watch," Ann answered.

　　"What a lovely present! Let me look at it please," Aunt Jane said.

　　Ann showed Aunt Jane her new watch. Aunt Jane looked at it carefully and gave it back to Ann.

　　"It's a very nice watch, Ann," she said. "And what did you receive, Mary?"

　　"Mary's parents gave her a beautiful sweater," Ann answered.

　　"You both look very pretty today," Aunt Jane said. "Come into the house, please. I've got a surprise for you."

　　Aunt Jane took them into the house and showed them two beautiful dresses. They were light blue and they were exactly the same.

　　"These are for you, Ann and Mary," Aunt Jane said. "Put them on and let me see how pretty you are."

　　Ann and Mary put on the dresses. They were very pleased. They thanked Aunt Jane and kissed her.

　　"We must go now, Aunt Jane," Ann said. "Thank you very, very much for the dresses."

　　"You look very pretty in them," Aunt Jane said. "Have a pleasant trip home."

　　Ann and Mary went out of the house. They were very excited.

　　"What a pleasant afternoon!" Ann said.

　　"Yes, indeed," Mary answered. "And what lovely dresses!"

　　"I'm wearing my new watch," Ann said. "It's half past three now. We can catch the four o'clock bus home."

　　They ran to the bus-stop and caught the four o'clock bus home. It was a pleasant trip. The sun was shining and the birds were singing.
