　　1、情态动词

　　本课侧重的是情态动词must、should和ought to的用法，同时也对比了have to的用法。如：

　　I must leave now.

　　She had to go shopping yesterday.

　　I should/ought to do some work tonight, but I think I shall go to the cinema instead.

　　本课里主要例举了let off、let down、let in、let out等短语。

　　Last Christmas, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates, decided to take some presents to a children's hospital. 1)注意last Christmas用逗号隔开了，主要是为了凸显后面的成分。 2)the circus owner，马戏团老板。 3)take presents to，把礼物带到某地。

　　Dressed up as Father Christmas and accompnied by a 'guard of honour' of six pretty girls, he set off down the main street of the city riding a baby elephant called Jumbo. 1)be dressed up as，装扮成。 2)Father Christmas，圣诞老人。也可作Saint Claus。 3)be accompanied by，由...陪伴、陪同。 4)a guard of honour，仪仗队。 5)set off，出发。 6)down the main street，此处的down表示沿着。 7)riding a baby elephant用作伴随状语 8)called Jumbo前面省略了that/which was。

　　He should have known that the police would never allow this sort of thing. 1)should have done，本该....。 2)would never allow，绝不会允许。

　　A policeman approached Jimmy and told him he ought to have gone along a side street as Junbo was holding up the traffic. 1)approach，走近、靠近。 2)ought to have done，本该。 3)a side street，小路。 4)hold up，阻碍、妨碍。

　　Though Jimmy agreed to go at once, Jumbo refused to move. 1)though，尽管、虽然。 2)agree to do sth.，同意做某事。 3)refuse to do，拒绝做某事。。

　　Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the man street. 1)push，推。其反义表达为pull(拉)。 2)get...off ...，把...从某地弄走。

　　Jumbo must weigh a few tons,' said a policeman afterwards, 'so it was fortunate that we didn't have to carry him. Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time.' 1)weigh+重量，表示某物有多重。 2)ton，吨。 3)afterwards，之后。 4)fortunate，幸运的。 5)that引导的是主语从句，it是形式主语。 6)arrest，逮捕。 7)as引导的是原因状语从句，表示由于、因为。 8)have a good record，有着良好的记录。 9)let sb. off，放过某人。
