　　While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked hisdoctor to tell him whether his operationhadbeen successful, but the doctor refused todo so. The following day, the patient asked for abedside telephone.

　　语法归纳：复习直接引语变间接引语

　　一句话总结：直接引语变间接引语最需要注意的是时态变化和相关词汇的变化。

　　精讲笔记：

　　1. While John Gilbert was in hospital, he asked his doctor to tell him whether hisoperation had been successful, but the doctor refused to do so.

　　当约翰·吉尔伯特住院的时候，他问医生他的手术是否做得成功，但医生拒绝告诉他。

　　语言点1 本句中while引导时间状语从句，but连接并列句。

　　语言点2 in hospital生病住院(参考Lesson 33课文分析)

　　语言点3 whether在此引导间接引语，直接引语为：Was my operation successful?根据直接引语变成间接引语的规则，一般过去时改为过去完成时。

　　2. The following day, the patient asked for a bedside telephone.

　　第二天，这位病人要了一部床头电话。

　　语言点1 the following day = the next day 第一天

　　语言点2 bedside telephone 床头电话

　　bedlamp 床头灯

　　bedstand 床头柜

　　3. When he was alone, he telephoned the hospital exchange and asked for DoctorMillington.

　　当房里只剩他一个人的时候，他接通了医院的交换台，要求与米灵顿医生讲话。
