　　Lesson 30 Is it a holiday?

　　Tomorrow is Saturday. Is it a holiday? No, it isn't. Saturday is a half-holiday in some offices, but it is not a holiday. Sunday is a holiday. It is a day of rest in the week. Banks and offices are closed on Sundays. Shops are also closed or open only for a few hours in the morning. In Britain, shops are closed on Sundays, but in many other countries they are open.

　　Christmas is a public holiday in Britain. It is on December 25th. Schools and most offices are closed from December 24th to 26th. The shops are usually very busy before Christmas. People buy presents, cards, and decorations. They send cards to their friends and relatives. Most families put up a Christmas tree and decorate it with colourful lights and ornaments. On Christmas Day, people usually have a big family dinner. They eat turkey, or goose, or duck with vegetables and Christmas pudding. Father Christmas comes in the night and leaves presents in stockings and under the tree. Boxing Day, the day after Christmas Day, is also a public holiday in Britain.

　　New Year's Day is on January 1st. It is also a public holiday in Britain. Most people see the New Year in at a party or at a friend's house. They sing and dance and welcome the New Year.

　　Easter is another public holiday in Britain. It is in March or April. Many people give each other chocolate eggs for Easter. They also eat hot cross buns, which are special buns with a cross on the top. The buns are usually eaten on Good Friday.

　　There are many other festivals which are celebrated in different parts of the world.
