　　Doris Lessing, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature, is one of the most distinguished writers of our time. In 2008, The Times ranked her fifth on a list of “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”.

　　2007 年诺贝尔文学奖得主多丽丝·莱辛是当代最杰出的作家之一。2008 年，《泰晤士报》将其排在“1945 年以来英国最伟大的 50 位作家”榜单的第五位。

　　The Grass Is Singing”, Lessing?s first novel, describes the miserable life of white women living in southern Africa in a patriarchal society.

　　《野草在歌唱》是莱辛的处女作，描写了非洲南部的男权社会中白人女性的悲惨命运。

　　Mary, the novel?s main character, is a southern African white woman who grew up in poverty; she longs to escape from a similar life like native blacks?.

　　小说的主人公玛丽是非洲南部的白人，自幼家境贫困，渴望摆脱与土著黑人相似的生存状况。

　　Her life improves after she begins working. But after she gets married under the social pressure, she despairs to find that she has stepped into a completely different life.

　　Mary?s husband Dick, who lacks patience and has poor management skills, is devoted to farm work. He is cold to Mary, and even refuses to give her a child. Mary then becomes an acrid woman who disgusts the black servants in her home and threats them as animals.

　　Later, a black worker named Moses breaks her dull life, and brings her the strength to survive. She is attracted by Moses and has an affair with him.

　　However, racial discrimination clings to every person, which dooms them to a miserable end. Mary and Moses? affair is found out, and Mary abandons Moses for her deep-rooted racial attitudes.

　　The book closes with Mary?s death at the hand of a furious Moses. Moses does not run from the scene, but waits for the arrival of the police peacefully.

　　Through this novel Lessing also presents to the readers her idea that any revolt on the part of the natives? is in vain in the “prison of race”.
