  新概念英语第二册学习笔记Lesson85

  1.I have just received a letter from my old school, informing me that my former headmaster, Mr. Stuart Page, will be retiring next week. 我刚刚收到母校的一封信,通知我说以前的校长斯图亚特.佩奇先生下星期就退休了。

  (1) "informing me that my former headmaster….next week" 现在分词 informing 引导伴随状语,修饰letter; Mr. Stuart 同位语,修饰 headmaster。

  (2) inform sb of sth 告知某人某事

  The manager asked his men to inform him everything concerning the sales in the time.

  经理要求他的下属把关于销售量的情况及时报告他。

  2. Pupils of the school, old and new, will be sending him a present to mark the occasion. 为了纪念这个日子,学校的学生——无论老同学还是新同学——将送他一件礼物。

  (1) pupil,(尤指)小学生; student 学生

  (2) mark庆祝,纪念(重要事件); 做记号;留痕迹;给(试卷等)打分数

  They held a party to mark the occasion.

  为了纪念这个日子

  The box of eggs was marked "With Care".

  这个鸡蛋盒标上了"小心"字样。

  3.All those who have contributed towards the gift will sign their names in a large album which will be sent to the headmaster's home. 所有凑钱买此礼品的人都将自己的名字签在一本大签名簿上,签名簿将被送到校长的家里

  (1) Contributed to/towards 对….有贡献

  How can insurance companies contribute to this process?

  在这一过程中保险公司能发挥什么作用

  (2) gift 和present 的区别

  A. 作为名词,present 不仅有礼物的意思,还有还有“现在,目前”;gift 则有“天赋”的意思

  B. present与gift都可以表示“礼物”、“赠品”,但gift相对要正式些:

  She has just received a beautiful birthday present.

  她刚刚收到一份漂亮的礼物。

  4. A great many former pupils will be attending a farewell dinner in his honour next Thursday很多老同学都准备参加下星期四为他举行的告别宴会。

  (1) farewell n.告别,辞行;再见;一路平安, 比goodbye正式。

  Farewell party/drinking 欢送会,别酒

  We’ve decided to have a farewell party before we graduate

  我们决定在毕业之前在举行一次告别晚会。

  A Farewell to Arms 永别了,武器 ( 海明威的一部小说)

  (2) attend 出席,参加

  The meeting was attended by 90% of shareholders

  90%的股东出席了会议。

  attend on sb 照料某人,服侍某人

  Who will attend on the patient? 谁来护理病人?

  注:有时其中的介词 on 可以省略。如:He has two nurses attending (on) him. 有两位护士护理他。

  attend to 注意听;处理;办理;照顾;照看

  Attend now to what I tell you. 现在注意听我给你讲。

  I’ll attend to the matter. 这事我来处理。

  If you go out, who will attend to the baby? 你要是出去,谁来照顾婴儿? 你要是出去,谁来照顾婴

  (3) in his honour作定语,表示“为向某人表示敬意” “为了庆祝”,也可以说in honour of sb/sth.

  A banquet was held in her honour.

  为欢迎她而举办的宴会

  The premier will give a banquet in honour of the distinguished visitors.

  总理将要举行宴会招待贵宾

  5.After he has retired, he will devote himself to gardening他退休后,将致力于园艺。

  Devote (与to 连用) 献身于;专心于

  He devoted all his life to his job.

  他把他的全部时间都用在工作上。

  Tax officials must implement the law impartially and devote themselves to their duties

  税务人员必须秉公执法,忠于职守

  He is devoted to his wife.

  他忠于她的妻子

  dedicate to:通常用dedicate sth. to(把某物奉献给…)

  devote to:主要用devote oneself to(把自己奉献给…事业)

  新概念英语第二册学习笔记Lesson86

  1.As the man tried to swing the speedboat round, the steering wheel came away in his hands. 当那人试图让快艇转弯时,方向盘脱手了。

  (1) 复合句,as引导时间状语从句,表示“当……..” as:同做“当……时”的时候,as更强调主从句动作同时发生,译作“一边……一边……”

  e.g. As he works, he studies.

  他半工半读(一边工作一边读书)。

  when从句动词点动词,持续性动词均可;

  as重在表示动作同时发生,伴随进行;

  while从句动词为持续性动词 例:While I slept, a thief broke in.

  (2) come away(from sth) 分离,脱离:

  e.g. the plaster had started to come away from the wall.

  灰泥已经开始从墙上脱落。

  2.Both men had hardly had time to realize what was happening when they were thrown violently into the sea.他们两个还没来得及意识到究竟发生了什么事情,就被猛地抛入了海里。

  (1) …hardly….when…表示“刚…就”

  We had hardly started our journey when the car got a flat tyre. 我们刚出发,车胎就破了。

  (2) Hardly…when…

  Hardly否定副词/半否定副词+倒装句, 当Hardly 放于句首时,则该主句部分必须使用倒装语序,而“when”从句部分语序不倒装。

  e.g. Hardly had he escaped when he was captured

  他险些就成了漏网之鱼。

  3.they swam on as quickly as they could, 他们以最快的速度向前游去。

  (1) 其中的第一个as为副词,其后通常接形容词或副词(用原级),第二个as可用作介词(后接名词或代词)或连词(后接从句)。第二个as后接从句时,该as通常为连词,但有时这个as还充当其后从句的主语或宾语,此时该as实为关系代词。

  e.g. I gave him as much as he could eat.

  他能吃多少,我就给了他多少。

  (2) on在这里是副词,表示“向前”:

  e.g She stopped for a moment , then walked on.

  她停了一会,随后又向前走

  4. They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle. 他们刚刚来得及游出危险区,快艇就又转究了一圈。

  enough的用法

  A. 在形容词之后使用:

  He failed the exam because it wasn't easy enough. 他考虑不及格,因为题不够容易。(不说 enough easy)

  B. 在名词之前使用:

  He didn' t buy the car because he didn't have enough money. 他没买那部车,因为他没有足够的钱。

  C. 可以用在 enough… for 和 enough… to do sth.结构之中:

  She hasn't got enough money for a holiday. 她没有足够的钱去度假。

  This dress isn't big enough for her. 这件衣服对她来说不够大。

  5.The petrol had nearly all been used up. 汽油几乎已经用光。

  (1) use up 用完,耗尽

  e.g.By this time he had used up all his savings.

  到这时,他的存款已经全部用完了。

  (2) petrol 汽油,在美国称为gasoline。

  e.g. The price of petrol is getting higher and higher.

  汽油价格一直在上涨。

  Petroleum n. 石油

  petroleum指石油,oil也可指石油,但其范围更广泛,还可指食用油,油画颜料等。

  e.g.Middle East is abundant in petroleum deposits.

  中东石油储量丰富

  (中国三大油企:中石油,中石化,中海油)

  1.A perfect alibi,(标题)极好的不在犯罪现场的证据。

  alibi为法律用语,含义是“不在场证明”、“当时不在场的申辩”,是可数名词:

  He must have cooked up an alibi.

  他准是编造了案发时不在场的假证。

  2. 'At the time the murder was committed, I was travelling on the 8 o'clock train to London,' said the man. “在凶杀发生的时候,我正坐在8点钟开往伦敦的火车上。”那人说。

  Commit

  (1) 犯(罪),做(错事等)

  He has never committed any crime before.

  他以前从来没有犯过罪。

  (2) 使承担义务;使作出保证;使表态(+to)

  The president is committed to reform the health care

  总统承诺要改革卫生保障制度

  (3)(公开) 表态,做出决定

  You don’t have to commit yourself now, just think about it.

  你不必现在表态,只需考虑下这件事。

  3.'I must be at work at 10 o'clock. My employer will confirm that I was there on time.'

  “我必须在10点钟上班,我的雇主会证明我是按时到了那儿的。”

  Confirm

  (1) 证实;确定(+that)(+wh-)

  Has everyone confirmed that they’re coming?

  他们是不是每个人都会过来

  Can you confirm what had happened?

  你能证实一下发生什么事了吗?

  (2) 确认,认可,批准(职位,协议)

  He was confirmed as captain for the rest of the season.

  他被正式的任命在这季剩下的一段时间里担任队长。

  4. 'I suppose it would, but I never catch a later train.'“我认为可以,但我从来不乘晚一点儿的车。”

  Suppose

  (1) [T]认定,假定

  I suppose you are right.

  我认为你说得对。

  (2) [T]假定或假设(某事物)属实

  Let's suppose (that) the news is true.

  让我们假定这消息是真的。

  (3) [T]用于祈使句,用以提出建议.

  Suppose your father saw you now, what would you say?

  假设你父亲现在看到了你, 你该怎么说?

  5.And you didn't notice anything unusual? 您没有注意到有什么异常情况发生吗?

  (1) 这是一个陈述疑问句,用升调提问。

  例如,如:“ You're out of work?”

  (2) 形容词作定语,修饰名词或不定代词,通常放在名词之前,不定代词之后。如:

  试比较二者不同

  This is an unhealthy diet.

  这是不健康的饮食习惯

  There is nothing important in today’s newspaper.

  今天的报纸没有重要的新闻

  6.I suggest…that you are not telling the truth. 我提醒您……您讲的不是实话。

  I suggest(that)…在这里用于提出质疑,译为“依我看……”、“恐怕……”:

  I suggest that he is not so honest as he looks.

  依我看他并不像他看上去那么诚实。

  7.You see, on the morning of the murder, the 8 o'clock train did not run at all. 您看,在凶杀发生的那天早晨,8点钟的那次车根本没有发。

  (1) you see在口语中经常作为插入语出现,句首、句中或句尾均可以,表示“你知道”、“事实上”等含义:

  My leg isn't all right yet, you see, so I can't climb the hill with you.

  你知道/你看,我的腿还没有完全好,所以我不能和你(们)一起爬山。

  (2) run可以指火车、公共汽车、船等“定时/定期行驶”、“(在两地间)往来”:

  This ship runs between Dover and Calais.

  这条船来往于多佛与加来之间。
