　　一、新概念2第40课知识点:make短语

　　(一)make conversation

　　该短语表示“闲聊”。如：

　　It can be very difficult to make conversation at a party. (在聚会时有时很难找话题跟人应酬。)

　　(二)make the bed

　　该短语表示“整理床铺”，有时bed也可以用复数，即make the beds。此外，定冠词the也可以去掉。如：

　　The first thing he does after getting up is to make the bed. (他起床后的第一件事就是整理床铺。)

　　She often goes downstairs after making the beds. (她经常整理好床铺后就下楼去.)

　　Can you send up one of your housekeepers to make bed? (请你派个女服务员来整理床铺好吗?)

　　Make beds and straighten up rooms. (整理床铺和房间。)

　　【注意】

　　英语中有一句相关的谚语，即：

　　As you make your bed so you must lie on it. (自己铺床自己睡，即“自作自受”。)

　　(三)make noise

　　该短语表示“叫嚷，发出噪音”。noise前可以插入much等修饰语。如：

　　You mustn't make noise in the reading room. (你不许在阅览室喧哗。)

　　Tell those boys not to make so much noise. (叫那些小男孩别这么大声嚷嚷。)

　　(四)make a promise

　　该短语表示“许诺”。如：

　　If you make a promise, you should fulfil it. (你若是作出允诺，就必须履行。)

　　(五)make trouble

　　该短语表示“闹事;捣乱”。trouble前可以插入much等修饰语。如：

　　If he comes here again and tries to make trouble, he'll get an earful from me. (他如果再来这里捣乱，我就会把他臭骂一顿。)

　　Ever since Fred made much trouble at our party last Christmas his name has been mud around here. (自从上次圣诞节弗莱德在我们的聚会上闹事之后，他在这一带已经名声狼藉了。)

　　(六)make progress

　　该短语表示“取得进步或进展”。progress前面可以插入great等修饰语。如：

　　He made progress in English bit by hit. (他在英语方面逐渐取得进步。)

　　Practise more and you'll make great progress. (练习,你会取得很大进步。)

　　(七)make money

　　该短语表示“赚钱”。money前面可以插入much等修饰语。如：

　　If you want to make money, buy cheap and sell dear. (要想赚钱就得贱买贵卖。)

　　We don't make much money,but we are able to keep our heads above water. (我们虽然挣钱不多，但总算还可以维持。)

　　【注意】

　　英语中表“赚钱”的另一个常用短语为：earn money。如：

　　I am going to teach until my son can earn money. (我教书要教到我儿子能够赚钱。)

　　(八)make a speech

　　该短语表示“做演讲”。如：

　　He is going to make a speech in public. (他将当众发表演说。)

　　(九)make a mistake

　　该短语表示“犯错”。mistake可以复数，即make mistakes。如：

　　If I made a mistake, I will try to remedy it. (我如果有错的话，我会改正的。)

　　We're all liable to make mistakes when we're tired. (人若疲劳谁都可能出差错。)

　　(十)make up one's mind

　　该短语表示“下定决心”。如果one's指的是复数，则mind也要用复数minds。如：

　　They gave me a week to make up my mind. (他们允许我有一周的时间作决定。)

　　It took us a long time to make up our minds. (我们花了很长时间才作出决定。)

　　二、其他常用的短语

　　(十一)make use of

　　该短语表示“利用;使用”。如：

　　We train them to make use of reference books. (我们训练他们使用参考书。)

　　We must make full use of our spare time. (我们必须善用我们的业余时间。)

　　(十二)make a difference

　　该短语表示“有影响;起作用”。如：

　　One honest man can make a difference. (有一个老实人就可以大变样。)

　　Does his absence make a difference to your work? (没有他,会影响你的工作吗?)

　　(十三)make sense

　　该短语表示“讲得通;有意义”。如：

　　This sentence doesn't make sense. (这个句子没有意义。)

　　They tried to make sense of her mumblings. ( 他们试图弄明白她在嘟哝些什么。)

　　(十四)make an effort

　　该短语表示“努力做某事”，其用法为：make an effort to do sth.。也可以用作：make effort或make efforts。如：

　　I'll make an effort to stop drinking alcohol. (我要尽力戒酒。)

　　The workers are making effort to overfulfil this year's plan. (工人们正在努力超额完成今年的计划。)

　　We must make efforts to translate our ideal into reality. (我们必须努力把理想变为现实。)
